The FDA announced it had amended
the emergency use authorizations for both the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech
vaccines allowing for a single booster dose for all individuals 18 years of age
and older after completion of primary vaccination with any of the approved COVID-19
vaccines.
The CDC also recommends that
adults should get a booster at least six months after their last COVID-19
vaccine.
People who got the Pfizer or
Moderna immunizations to start would be eligible for a booster six months after
their second shot, the FDA said. People who got the Johnson & Johnson
vaccine would be eligible for a booster two months after their first shot.
The booster shot is half of the dose of a primary series dose.
Prior to authorization, the FDA
analyzed immune response data on clinical trial participants who had received
both doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. It found an antibody
response against the SARS-CoV-2 virus 29 days after a Moderna booster dose and
a month after the Pfizer booster. Both vaccines demonstrated a booster
response, the FDA said.
