Statins, also known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, are a class of lipid-lowering medications that reduce illness and mortality in those who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease. They are the most common cholesterol-lowering drugs.
In the analysis of 135 previous studies, which included nearly 250,000 people combined, researchers found that the drugs simvastatin and pravastatin had the fewest side effects in this class of medications.
After starting a statin, it takes about six weeks for cholesterol levels to stabilise, so cholesterol should be re-checked after about eight weeks. Patient should have a check-up at least once a year or more often if it is necessary.
Statins also have anti-inflammatory effects, including reducing C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations (1). The effects of lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol with statins may lead to anti-inflammatory actions because LDL cholesterol itself strongly promotes inflammation.
Statins and Inflammation: New Therapeutic Opportunities ... - Frontiers
Statins are drugs that lower the cholesterol. But if the patient's age 75 or older and haven't had symptoms of heart disease, statins may be a bad idea. Here's why: Adults age 75 and older may not need statins.
The side effects of statins include diarrhoea and constipation, although no pathophysiological explanation is provided by the manufacturer.
Unexpected outcome (positive or negative) including adverse drug …
Statins not only reduce cholesterol by blocking a substance body needs to make cholesterol, they can also lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and even death from heart disease by up to 20-30 percent by reducing inflammation.
