AstraZeneca, Pfizer vaccines effective against Indian Delta COVID-19 variants

A study by the University of Oxford, published in the journal Cell, demonstrates that currently available vaccines, including AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, will provide protection against the  Delta (B.1.617.2) and Kappa (B1.617.1) variants; formerly the ‘Indian’ variants.

The study, investigated the ability of antibodies in the blood of people, who were vaccinated with the two-shot regimens, to neutralize the highly contagious Delta and Kappa variants.

These results build on the recent analysis by Public Health England showing early evidence of real-world data that two doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine are effective against the Delta variant, with similar levels of protection achieved as those seen against the Alpha variant.

Last week, an analysis by the Public Health England (PHE) showed that vaccines made by Pfizer Inc and AstraZeneca offer high protection of more than 90 per cent against hospitalization from the Delta variant.

Note: However, the concentration of neutralising antibodies in the blood was somewhat reduced, which may lead to some breakthrough infections, they cautioned.
