A Double Action Antacid &
Alginate Liquid was more effective than an antacid in controlling postprandial
esophageal acid exposure in GERD patients.
This suggests that this main
effectiveness related to its co-localization with and
displacement/neutralization of the post-prandial acid pocket, rather than
preventing reflux.
Heartburn is a cardinal symptom
of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and is among the most common patient
complaints.
Antacids neutralize gastric acid in a short timeframe after ingestion but the effect is soon overcome by meal-stimulated acid secretion. Alternatively, an alginate-antacid combination creates a ‘raft’ floating on top of the ingested chyme that co-localizes in the region of the acid pocket, potentially offering more effective targeted therapy.
Treatment of symptoms resulting
from the reflux of acid, bile and pepsin into the oesophagus such as acid
regurgitation, heartburn and indigestion, for example following meals or during
pregnancy, and for symptoms of hyperacidity.
Can also be used to treat the
symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux during concomitant treatment with or
following withdrawal of acid suppressing therapy.
Currently, antacid use is restricted to the relief of
mild intermittent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) associated
heartburn.
This product is considered high
in sodium. This should be particularly taken into account for those on a low
salt diet (e.g. in some cases of congestive heart failure and renal
impairment).
Each 20 ml contains 260 mg (6.5
mmol) of calcium. Care needs to be taken in treating patients with
hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis and recurrent calcium containing renal
calculi.
