TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
This study
showed that, in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances, twice weekly use of
0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash reduced the plaque, gingival, and gingival
bleeding indexes when evaluated at 15, 30, and 60 days of protocol
implementation.
Chlorhexidine
(CHX) mouthwash is the first choice because of its antigingivitis effect.
CHX has
antibacterial effects.
CHX
mouthwash (0.12%) decreased microbial levels and periodontal index.
The most
favorable period to maintain with CHX mouthwash was 30 days.
The
discoloration index increased at 30 days and was highest at 60 days.
In the
control group (mechanical plaque control only), no changes were observed in the
plaque, gingival, gingival bleeding, or discoloration indexes at any time point
evaluated.
The authors conclude that 0.12% CHX mouthwash can be used twice weekly for 30 days without causing significant extrinsic tooth staining. Thereafter, its use may be resumed following a 30-day period of abstinence, if desired.
