Association between Uric Acid Levels and the Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice: November 21, 2022

The relationship between serum uric acid levels and incident type 2 diabetes remains controversial.

This cohort study assessed the association between serum uric acid levels and the incidence of type 2 diabetes in a Japanese population.

TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

There was no significant association between serum uric acid levels and the incidence of type 2 diabetes in men; however, the risk of type 2 diabetes was higher in women with uric acid levels of 5.1 mg/dL to 6 mg/dL and >6.1 mg/dL compared with patients with uric acid levels ≤3 mg/dL.

Serum uric acid levels may be associated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes in Japanese women but not in men.

In men, serum uric acid levels were not associated with incident type 2 diabetes.

In women, serum uric acid levels were associated with incident type 2 diabetes.
