Montelukast for Prevention & Treatment of Chronic Asthma

Montelukast is used to control and prevent symptoms caused by asthma. It is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm).

Asthma Symptoms:


Montelukast recommended dose is once a day in the evening and it’s important to take it regularly even when patient have no symptoms.

Note: Montelukast is not a rescue medicine for acute asthma or status asthmaticus.

The following conditions are contraindicated with this drug:

Suicidal thoughts

Known aspirin sensitivity

Increased eosinophil in the blood

It is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (Exercise induced bronchospasm).


Montelukast is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and Allergic Rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose) and Persistent cough (COPD).




Prophylaxis and maintenance treatment of Chronic Asthma

Oral

Adult:

10 mg once daily in the evening.

 

Children

<12 months: Safety and efficacy not established

Children 12-23 months: 4 mg (granules) once daily in evening

2-5 years: 4 mg (chewable tablet or orodispersible tablet) once daily in evening

6-14 years: 5 mg (chewable tablet or orodispersible tablet) once daily in evening

15 years and Older: 10 mg tablet once daily in evening

 

·        Prophylaxis of Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm

Adult:

10 mg at least 2 hr prior to exercise; do not take additional doses w/in 24 hr.

 

Children:

6-14 years: 5 mg 2 hours before exercise; do not take additional dose within 24 hours

15 years and Older: 10 mg 2 hours before exercise; do not take additional dose within 24 hours

 

Note: An additional dose of montelukast should not be taken within 24 hours of a previous dose. Patients already taking one tablet daily for another indication (including chronic asthma) should not take an additional dose to prevent exercise induced bronchospasm. All patients should have available for rescue a short-acting β-agonist.
